Georgette "Gigi" Godwin has served as the President and CEO of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) since 2007. The Chamber is a business membership and advocacy organization with 500 members, 60 Board of Directors and 22 Advisory Board members. In 2014, The Washington Business Journal ranked the Chamber #3 out of the Top 25 Business Organizations in the Washington, DC area. The Chamber’s mission is to help members grow and to advocate for a vibrant regional economy. Gigi’s background includes Federal government, non-profit, business & local community experience.
Gigi also serves as the Treasurer for the Montgomery County Chamber Community Foundation which sponsors the National Center of the Veteran Institute for Procurement & the Montgomery County Green Business Certification Partnership. In 2010 she received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for “Outstanding Support of our Veterans” for her work in supporting the Chamber Foundation’s Veteran Institute for Procurement.
Before serving as President and CEO, she served as the Chamber’s Vice President for Public Affairs. Gigi is an active member of the community and has served on many boards, including the Montgomery College Board of Trustees, Montgomery County Business Roundtable on Education, Committee for Montgomery and Imagination Stage.
Earlier in her career, Gigi served on the staff of the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, and worked on the first Superfund legislation, renewable energy and transportation funding. While working on Capitol Hill, she co-founded and served as the first President of the Women’s Council on Energy and the Environment (WCEE), as a non-partisan policy forum to improve collaboration and communication among energy and environmental professionals. She left the Hill to work in alternative energy and managed the company’s M&A process. Earlier, she served as a Jr. Sloan Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences’ Climate Research Board in Washington, D.C. and interned at the U.S. EPA while in graduate school.
Her family business experiences include, the steel industry, commercial and residential development, wine production, and both video and Broadway productions.
Recent awards: The Daily Record 2013 Most Influential Marylander Award for her Civic Leadership; and, 2012 Director’s Award for Public Support and Advocacy in Public Safety.
Gigi earned a master’s degree in Public Administration from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Grinnell College. She grew up in Gary, Indiana near Chicago. She and her husband, Jeff, moved to Montgomery County in 1985 where they raised three children, two sons and a daughter.
