Fast Facts: Economic Impact From Global Trade

United States international trade and investment agreements play a major role in maximizing economic growth in Maryland and all 50 states.

In the United States:

  • 95% of the world’s population is outside of the U.S.
  • More than 1 in 5 American jobs are supported by trade

In Maryland:

  • International trade supports an estimated 767,000 jobs in Maryland and generated $11.7 billion in goods exports in 2012
  • Trade-related employment grew 4 times faster than total employment in Maryland from 2004 to 2011
  • Maryland's goods exports have grown 2½ times faster than state GDP since 2002
  • 89% of Maryland exporters are small and medium sized companies with less than 500 workers
  • U.S. trade with free trade agreement (FTA) partner countries has led to export growth, and since 2002, Maryland’s goods exports to FTA partners have increased by 135%
  • $3.6 billion of Maryland’s goods exports (31%) went to FTA partners in 2012
